This Week in African Tech 🌍
Sending cash home may soon get pricier💰
Hey, Maryann here 👋🏽
May closes out on a high note with major stories and bold moves. The US is eyeing remittances with a controversial new tax, Egypt’s fintech space is buzzing with activity, and Kenya’s Equity Bank just carried out one of the largest fraud-related purges in recent memory. On the brighter side, we’re seeing fresh partnerships, funding rounds, and some historic firsts lighting up the continent.
There’s a lot to unpack, but before we get into it….we have a quick announcement.

How do you scale an African startup in the AI age?
Paul Breloff founded Shortlist in 2015 and has built it into the leader in Executive Search and Workforce Innovation across Africa.
On Tuesday, June 3, at the second edition of the Talent Safari Webinar series, we'll discuss how Paul built Shortlist, the common mistakes he sees startup founders make when hiring, and how scaling a startup team in Africa is likely to change as AI progresses.

Now, on to this week’s roundup….
